It’s a little bit like whack a mole, though far more deadly.
Whack a mole is, of course, a game in which players use a mallet to hit toy moles, which appear - and disappear - at random, back into their holes. .. rather like efforts at controlling the number of deadly shootings in this country through the limited regulation of guns.
On Thursday, Connecticut’s U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy joined with a bipartisan group of colleagues to strengthen the FBI database of prohibited gun buyers after the Air Force failed to report the criminal history of the gunman who slaughtered more than two dozen people in a Texas church Nov. 5.
That same day, we learned about “ghost guns,” the weapons of choice for the California shooter who killed his wife and four others in a rampage this week.
What are ghost guns? Guns without serial numbers because they are made at home.
That’s especially worrisome for police because, as former NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told ABC News, “When responding to a call, there could be no record that anyone there has a gun.”
Although, the same case could be made for illegal guns, too, Kelly said.
FBI agent Steve Gomez added, “If lawmakers took steps to make the gun laws more restrictive, those unlicensed home-made firearms would be highly sought after by people and criminals who do not care to comply with the law.”
This is especially concerning because the number of mass shooting seems to be increasing. And, as much as we fear attacks by foreign terrorists, for the most part, these are hometown shooters.
How do we protect ourselves from … ourselves?
