To the Editor:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Human Resource Agency of New Britain, Inc., (HRA) we condemn the racial injustice that continues to tear at the fiber of our nation and have recommitted ourselves to the eradication of racism by what we do best: community action.

Since its inception more than 50 years ago, HRA has, as our mission statement says, “worked to improve the quality of life by helping people achieve their economic and social potential; responding to the causes and conditions of poverty; and building stronger individuals, families and the communities we serve.”

We know firsthand how structural racism fuels poverty and denies individuals of economic and social opportunities in so many insidious ways, resulting in the breakdown of families and neighborhoods.

Our frontline staff has for decades witnessed and supported every individual and family who has walked though our doors. They stand shoulder to shoulder with individuals and families listening and partnering to strengthen not only their lives, but the neighborhoods as well. Most important, our dedicated staff has listened compassionately and supportively and have informed HRA board members what needs to be done resulting in community action, the essence of what we do. We know it works and so do the many individuals and families who have been able to move out of poverty.

We will continue to partner with the Connecticut Association for Community Action (CAFCA), community action agencies, and our collaborating partners to eradicate police violence and preserve the First Amendment, specifically the right to peacefully demonstrate.
