To the Editor:

In 2018 I did some volunteer work for the Jahana Hayes campaign, and got to know this brilliant and forceful woman who was then best known as a National Teacher of the Year - unless you were a Waterbury student of hers.

The ones I met knew her as an inspiring educator who didn’t miss a trick. In her two years in Congress since then, she has had lots of chances to exercise what one commentator called her “ability to manage classrooms full of sometimes volatile and sometimes reluctant adolescents.” This is a great description of our government right now.

In her role on the House Committee on Labor and Education she has questioned some officials who must have thought they had been sent to the principal’s office. She’s supported the Heroes Act, whose compassionate aim is to relieve the pandemic’s devastating economic effects, not to mention a score of other worthy measures of benefit to the cities and towns of the 5th Congressional District. She is a woman of faith and her role in a law enforcement family has given her added strength to carry out her mission.

She well deserves a second term.
