To the Editor:
I would like to thank state Rep. Gary Turco for safeguarding our right to vote during the covid-19 pandemic.
Gary understands that safe and secure voting is fundamental to democracy. In a special session of the Legislature, he joined with his colleagues to ensure that any Connecticut voter can choose to request an absentee ballot for the November 3rd election.
Recently, we all received absentee ballot applications in the mail. If voters don’t want to enter a crowded polling place, they can fill out the application, check covid-19 as a reason and return the completed application. (For those who would prefer to vote in person, the polls will be open as usual on November 3rd.)
We all have heard about efforts to slow down the U.S. Mail. Fortunately, voters have another option to return their applications. Thanks to the Secretary of the State’s office, there is a secure drop box for applications and ballots which has been installed on Garfield Street outside the old Town Hall gym. This box meets the most stringent state security standards and is emptied daily.
I appreciate Gary’s support of safe voting options as well as his efforts to educate voters of their availability. As he has often said, no one should have to choose between protecting their health and exercising their right to vote. It is clear that Gary puts our safety first, and I am proud to support his re-election.
