The McDougall Agency opened his Farmers Insurance agency two years ago this month and it has already proved to be an excellent match.
Selecting an insurance company can often be like trying to find the best looking apple on a large apple tree. Yet, it’s a fact that those who seek the best agency usually rely on someone they can trust, someone they know or better yet, a locally-owned agency operated by a fellow citizen. Southington, like other towns, has a host of reputable companies selling insurance from A to Z.
When Southington’s Bill McDougall realized it was time for a career change after being in the banking field, he found his comfort level after joining Farmers Insurance, a relatively young company that has expanded into 35 states including Connecticut. His agency is Farmers’ first in the town. The son of a community activist by the same name, McDougall owns one of Farmers’ 50 agencies. Located at 10 Queen Street and his office is quite welcoming. “I want to be here for people and to be available for advice,” he stated, noting that potential clients deserve the attention.
The former banker-turned insurance agent was a former standout pitcher for the high school baseball team in 1993 and later proudly graduated from George Washington University in 1998. He spent 17 years honing his business skills at several local banks but always kept an eye out for a new and challenging career. He soon realized how people struggle with finding various insurance needs.
McDougall firmly believes insurance isn’t always about price. He combines his gracious personality and experience dealing with people who often aren’t fully educated about purchasing insurance. He understands that larger firms have the benefit of massive ad campaigns, but Farmers has also flooded the networks with its own persuasive commercials. His agency is two years old but McDougall feels Farmers has provided him with extensive training and support, enough to be among the best local providers of insurance knowledge.
McDougall isn’t just a local resident with nothing more than a street address. His mother is a well-known realtor and his father, who has vast business experience and is a volunteer of several non-profits organizations, is there to be a part-time agent and close confidant. “Southington is a business friendly community and I’m looking forward to being a member of the Rotary Club,” adding that he is sincere about helping people make difficult decisions.
Isn’t selling insurance difficult with so many competitors? “It’s all about relationships. A lot of people still go online to get an instant quote, but most of the agency agents aren’t providing the proper coverage for those who may have a couple of cars and a shoreline property plus we offer all types of insurance coverage,” McDougall replied.
Sitting alongside McDougall is a 20-year veteran of the insurance industry, Heather Pappas, who was hired as office manager. And, internet posting has provided excellent response to Farmers Insurance, so much so that the office has hired an additional staff member.
Farmers Insurance obviously is impressed with the local agency. Several months ago McDougall was awarded the Farmers National Blue Vase honor that is bestowed on new agents that exemplify best practices for growth within multiple lines of business.
A prospective client who was leaving the office prior to this interview, commented, “I never got this kind of attention and education about insurance like I did minutes ago.”
