PLAINVILLE - The Plainville Economic Development Agency awarded Ed Roy, owner of Walker Crane, with a Business Expansion Award for completing the fifth additions to his location on Farmington Valley Drive.

Walker Crane, located at 50 Farmington Valley Drive, moved to Plainville from New Britain in 1998. Since then, they have completed five additions to increase their space from 33,600 square feet to 104,880 square feet. They have also gone from 15 to 20 employees to nearly double that number. Walker Crane trucks construction equipment out to 48 states.

Roy said that he decided to move to Plainville to be closer to Trumpf, Inc., of Farmington, one of his biggest customers. Trumpf, Roy said, have “grown slowly, one step at a time” and Walker Crane has grown to keep pace.

“I didn’t grow up here but I enjoy being here. Business is good and steady,” said Roy. “It is close to the highway and the town offers us tax abatements. We could have moved to Farmington, but Plainville was more affordable and more inviting. The whole town has been very welcoming to us from the first day we have bought land. We’ve been throwing the idea around of doing another addition in a year or two.”

Roy said that the most recent expansion was to create a shed roof with which to protect heavy machinery from the elements.

“I’m thrilled that he says the town is accommodating,” said Val Dumais, chair of the economic development agency. “Every department bends over backwards to help out businesses. It is equally important to us to grow the businesses that we have as it is to attract new businesses. Ed is very active in the community as well. I’m in Rotary and every year Walker Crane has been a sponsor of our penny sale. He’s a good businessman to say the least.”
