NEW BRITAIN - Instacart, the growing retail delivery service whose personal shoppers hand-pick and deliver items from local stores, has expanded into the New Britain area.

As of today, city residents and those in communities including Newington and South-ington can order from retailers and have groceries at their doorsteps in as little as one hour.

“Over the past year, we’ve seen incredible demand in the Hartford area,” said Dave Schloss, Instacart general manager. “We work with a variety of local retailers to provide the freshest, highest quality groceries to our customers. Expansion into Hartford gives us an opportunity to expand service in the Connecticut market. We’re also excited to build a world class shopper community, offering fun and flexible jobs for our shoppers, who ultimately deliver this amazing service to the community.”

The online service works by customers accessing , selecting a city and store, adding items to a virtual cart and choosing a delivery window within one hour, two hours or up to seven days in advance. An Instacart personal shopper accepts the order on the shopper’s smartphone, uses the Instacart Shopper app to guide them through shopping and then delivers the order to the customer in the designated delivery timeframe.

Residents in 57 zip codes around central Connecticut can now order from stores including Big Y, BJ’s, Petco, Costco, Price Rite and Whole Foods Market. Instacart’s launch will also bring new jobs to the area with plans to bring on more than 100 new “professional” shoppers, Schloss said.

Founded in San Francisco in 2012, Instacart is in 28 metropolitan areas across the U.S. and has partnered with dozens of grocery retailers, national chains as well as local and regional grocers.
