NEW BRITAIN-After a month’s delay, the Zoning Subcommittee of the Common Council voted in favor of granting a certificate of location approval to bring a motor vehicle dealer and general repairers to West Main Street during a meeting Tuesday night.
J’s Auto Sales and Repair LLC – owned by Jesus Ruiz of Bristol – plans to sell used cars and repair vehicles at 866 West Main St., the former Marine Service site.
Ruiz, who graduated from E.C. Goodwin Technical High School in 2000, also hopes to work with students in the automotive program there to give them hands on experience and guidance.
The site, which has remained vacant for more than a year, was expected to sell and service high-end vehicles earlier this year.
In January, the Common Council granted a certificate of location for motor vehicle dealer’s and repairer’s license to CJ Auto Mall, LLC after originally hearing about it on July 22, 2016. The company ended up not pursuing the location because of the lengthy time it took to get city approval.
The delay for whether J’s Auto Sales would be granted a certificate of location approval was due to the council being unsure if it was necessary to apply for one again because it was already previously granted to CJ Auto Mall, and concern that the sign location did not abide by city code – the sign has since been moved to meet the regulations.
Plans for J’s Auto Sales call for improved landscaping and lighting for the property. The lot would comprise 25 parking spaces – 19 reserved for employees and vehicles being repaired or up for sale. The remaining six would be designated for customers.
The Council also voted in favor of granting a certificate of location approval for Jeffrey Oliveira of Oliveira Automotive LLC at 311 Oak St. to allow a motor vehicle repairer license for the property, formerly the site of Mad Max’s Motorsports.
Both requests for granting a certificate of location approval will be voted on during next week’s Common Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 13.
The agenda item to change the zoning of a portion of property at the northeastern corner of Newington Avenue and John Downey Drive will be addressed during a public hearing meeting scheduled for Oct. 3.
The property at 265 and 270 Newington Ave. changed from I-1(Industrial Park) to B-3 (Secondary Business) to prepare for the Arcesi Family Investment Limited Partnership by the Bongiovanni Group.
