NEW BRITAIN - Jay Salvio has a background in corporate insurance and a Masters in Business Administration while his son, Andrew, has been a mechanic for over eight years after being dealer trained in Porsche and Audi repairs.

Jay Salvio told his son that once an opportunity came for Andrew to own his own business, Jay would help him out by running the business side as his son has the mechanical expertise.

“I thought it would be a little further down the road in our careers,” joked Jay Salvio. “But here we are.”

The two took over A-1 Automotive Transmission Center, 51 Wooster St., in September of last year from the previous owner, who ran the shop that has been in business for over 25 years.

Despite the new ownership, Jay Salvio says they still provide the same great service.

“We do everything here,” said Salvio. “Repairs on all makes, all models, general repairs and transmissions.”

But what makes A-1 Automotive Transmission Center different is their ability to work on foreign cars, while still providing great general repair and transmission work.

“My son went to the Audi academy, he went to the Porsche academy, and both of those vehicles are owned by Volkswagen and a lot of those vehicles are similar,” said Jay Salvio.

With several garage bays and the mechanic team of Andrew and Mike Henry - who have been with the shop for over 20 years - the shop is able to provide direct customer service that is honest and practical, too.

“We kind of have our hands in just about everything,” said Jay Salvio.

As a way to keep modern with the times, Jay said, both mechanics are ASE certified, are constantly reading up on the latest auto mechanic trends, and keep technology and equipment up to date.

Outside of the mechanical repairs, A-1 Automotive & Transmission offers used car sales with ability to help in financing.

“We try to buy our vehicles where we know its history,” said Jay.

Going forward, Jay Salvio said his business would like to focus on more of the foreign car repairs, while still providing the same general repairs.

“We do everything,” said Henry. “Timing belt, brakes, motor job, transmission, electrical work, tuning, everything.”
