NEW BRITAIN - To keep up with a growing market demand, New Britain-based manufacturer Acme Monaco opened a new facility in Maine.

“This new plant culminates years of planning on our part and, along with the recently upgraded facilities at our world headquarters in New Britain, truly positions us for the future,” Co-President Rebecca Karabin-Ahern said.

Acme Monaco manufactures orthodontic hardware, wireforms, fourslide stampings, computer numerical control springs and medical guidewires. The company first opened a plant in Presque Isle, Maine in 1989, but needed more space to expand operations.

The 16,300-square-foot facility is located in Presque Isle’s Skyway Industrial Park. It maximizes production efficiencies by consolidating two existing Presque Isle plants, while adding nearly 5,000 square feet of overall space.

The $3.1 million project was funded by a combination of government grants, including funds from the State of Maine Department of Economic and Community Development’s Community Development Block Grant Program, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Northern Border Regional Commission. A&L Construction of Presque Isle was the project’s construction manager, with architectural design services provided by North Peak Architecture of Presque Isle.

The company, which is celebrating its 70th year of operations this year, also is investing more than $1 million of its own funds, primarily in equipment.

“We’ve been thrilled with the support we’ve received from the City of Presque Isle and the State of Maine,” said Karabin-Ahern. “This new plant will allow us to achieve increased efficiencies and reduce lead times for our customers, ensuring our place in a very competitive marketplace for years to come.”

Co-President Lucas Karabin added, “With nearly 30 years in the state of Maine and a new manufacturing plant, Acme Monaco is growing and expanding the skill levels of young and veteran employees alike.”

Acme Monaco Corp. was founded in 1947 in New Britain as Acme Spring, a manufacturer of custom spring products. The company has grown and diversified over the decades, venturing into orthodontic hardware in the 1970s. They have another location in Singapore, which opened in 2007.

Acme Monaco currently employs more than 200 people worldwide, including more than 130 at its New Britain plant and 70 in Presque Isle. The company expects its employment force to grow by as much as 10 percent over the next 18 to 24 months.
