SOUTHINGTON - Max Pizza opens its sixth location Saturday, at the site of the former Plantsville Pizza.
Owner Stelios Koutouvides says he is proud of how far his business has come since he opened his first pizzeria in Bristol in 1976.
“It’s kind of a great accomplishment,” said Koutouvides. “We make a good product that the customers really like. We have good customers and we have great employees. Great employees are the biggest asset you can have in this business and teamwork is very important.”
The new restaurant, at 848 S. Main St., Plantsville, will join already-open locations in Bristol, Newington, Burlington and New Britain and a future location in Bristol as the local pizza chain continues to expand.
Koutouvides said several customers from Southington had been coming to his Bristol restaurant, which got him thinking about putting a Max Pizza in Southington.
He then “found the right space” and began moving in furniture and decorating the walls with his own paintings.
Koutouvides said he has been an avid painter for many years.
As for the name Max Pizza, he said he named the restaurants after his childhood dog.
“My own name is hard. Nobody would remember it,” he laughed. “I felt ‘Max’ would be a simple name that everybody would like and that they wouldn’t forget.”
As for the future of the Max Pizza chain, Koutouvides said he is going to wait a year or two and see how this new location does. If it is successful, he may consider a seventh location in another town.
Koutouvides encouraged anyone who hasn’t tried Max Pizza to stop in, saying all first-time customers who tell him so will get a free slice.
Max Pizza 6 will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
Koutouvides is in the process of creating a website that will have the menus for all his restaurants. That site will be MaxPizzaOnline.com.
