NEWINGTON - Valentine’s Day marked history in Newington with the opening of the first Connecticut location of Artichoke Basille’s Pizza.

The new business had a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday and members of the Newington Chamber of Commerce as well as other Artichoke franchise officials took part in the event.

Artichoke Basille’s Pizza is located at 2391 Berlin Turnpike and Matthew Rusconi is the Connecticut franchisee for the food establishment.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the Artichoke pizza franchise,” Rusconi said. “I’m so excited to be in Newington. Always our best partner is the community. Our goal here is to provide a place for great pizza, first of all, which is why I got involved, a great atmosphere, lunch, dinner, and some of the late night too. We hope to have some karaoke and do some fun things here. I believe Newington is a central location for Connecticut. There’s a lot of traffic, it’s a great town. What better place to introduce the brand to Connecticut than in Newington.”

Artichoke Basille’s Pizza menu includes slices and 18-inch whole pies. The restaurant’s pizza varieties include artichoke, Basille regular, pepperoni, white, Sicilian margherita, Sicillian vodka, margherita, meatball parmigiana, crab and Staten Island. The menu also includes non-pizza items such as meatballs and ricotta, meatball rolls, calzones, garlic sticks, garlic knots and salads.

The restaurant also has a full bar and has a partnership with Alvarium Beer of New Britain.

“We are working with the Alvarium Beer Company. We are actually getting their beer on tap. We are very excited to showcase local breweries as well.”

The restaurant also has a piano, available for anyone to play while visiting.

“We are excited that Artichoke Basille’s Pizza has selected Newington for their first Connecticut franchise,” Pete Forcellina, executive director of the Newington Chamber of Commerce, said. “We think they are in a really good position to do very well here.”

Rusconi said the building is leased, but it was built and designed specifically for Artichoke Basille’s Pizza. The building, which has bricks inside, was designed to provide a New York feel.

Rusconi is also the owner of seven Moe’s Southwest Grill franchises across Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Artichoke Basille’s Pizza offers delivery. Orders can be placed online through DoorDash, Uber Eats or GrubHub. Orders can also by placed by calling the restaurant at 860-785-8329 or through
