PLAINVILLE - From school photos and portraits, to worldwide events, there’s a photography business in Plainville that is committed to providing quality photographs at affordable prices.

Premier Portraits Studio, at 260 East St., is that company, run by Jeff DiCosimo and his daughter Candace DiCosimo-Byrne.

“I like being able to help people,” said DiCosimo, who began his interest in photography in high school during the 1970s. After working for a couple of photography businesses he decided to go solo in 1994, and began his own business three years later.

“Our main business is school portrait photography and youth sport leagues. We also offer family portraits, event photography, where we have the ability to take and print pictures on site,” said DiCosimo, adding he takes school portraits in more than 55 schools around the state.

Other services the local photo shop provides are photography for corporate events; company head shots; engagement sessions; child and family portraits; pet photography; and printing and digitizing old photo slides, and photo restoration - which can involve anything from putting back together old photographs to reprinting photographs with minor scratches removed. A photo booth is also available for events, please call for more info.

“In the past few years we have expanded and added youth sports under the company name of Bear Sports! We photograph approximately 40 youth sport leagues throughout the year,” he said.

At his office, DiCosimo houses all the equipment necessary to take, edit, and produce portraits. In the studio, multiple backdrops, curtains and props - from educational bookshelf backdrops, to solid colors, to basketballs and rocking horses - are available for use.

“We can fit families as big as 15 in the studio,” DiCosimo said. “Anything more we can go outside or I can meet them at their house, or any off-site location.”

By also having industrial inkjet printers in house, three of which can print 300 8x10 portraits an hour, DiCosimo explained that he is also able to meet the potential immediacy of customers.

“We’ve had people say they’ve needed photos that day and we’ve been able to help them,” said DiCosimo, who will do whatever it takes to help with photography needs.

He has a larger printer that can print anywhere from 44 inches wide by up to 10 feet long, however big a customer needs it to be, along with wall murals. He can also print the traditional 40 x 60 portraits.

A member of the Professional Photographers Association and Associated Professional School Photographers, DiCosimo meets twice a year with his industry peers to discuss the trends in school photography. He has also been the Plainville Chamber of Commerce president for four years now.

Going forward, DiCosimo, who has traveled all around the country for over 20 years as the official photographer for the international school competition Odyssey of the Mind, said he would like to expand the number of schools he takes class portraits for, as well as his restoration and digitizing of slides services. He would also like to eventually hand his business off to his daughter.

“She has a great business mindset and skill set,” DiCosimo said, “and she will keep the company moving forward in the future.”
