NEW BRITAIN - One day after throwing out the ceremonial first pitch in the season opener for the New Britain Bees, Mayor Erin Stewart got engaged to longtime boyfriend Domenico Mutone.
In social media posts early Saturday night, a smiling Stewart is seen with Mutone, of Bristol, as she displays her newly adorned ring finger. “I said yes!!!” she wrote, accompanied by four emojis.
“It was an amazing weekend in Boston,” Stewart said Monday. “Like any bride-to-be, I am still trying to come off of Cloud 9. We are looking forward to building our life together.”
She and Mutone, 35, have been dating for about two years. The engagement took place during a weekend trip to Boston.
“It was the first place we took an out-of-state trip to (early in the relationship), so it was meaningful,” Stewart said.
The Republican mayor said her fiancé had sought the blessing of her father, former Mayor Tim Stewart, and received it “despite the fact that he’s a Democrat,” she said with a laugh.
Stewart, who will turn 30 on May 4, is seeking a third term as mayor this fall. On Sunday, Democratic city school board member Merrill Gay officially his bid to unseat her. He is expected to be endorsed by the Democratic Town Committee in June.
