Nursing scholarships were awarded to seven area nursing students by the Wethersfield-Rocky Hill Professional Nurses Association at its recent annual meeting.

This year’s scholarship recipients are Victoria Brown of Wethersfield, Annette Brzoska of New Britain, Alyssa Chmielecki-Callahan of Wallingford, Edward Mazzarese of Middletown, Veronica Pita of Wethersfield, Shannon Rattrey of Windsor and Martha Szpak of Manchester.

For over 75 years, the association has been active in community service, including staffing the influenza and public health clinics for the Central Connecticut Health District and overseeing a medical equipment loan closet for the town of Wethersfield.

The group also provides continuing education and networking opportunities for professional nurses in the area and annually awards scholarships to support students preparing to become registered nurses; and for registered nurses to continue their education.

This year’s scholarships were made available through member donations and fundraising as well as memorial gifts from the families of the late Juliette Libby, formerly of Wethersfield and the late Margaret (“Peg”) Von Achen, formerly of Rocky Hill; and generous donations from the Alumnae Association of Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford and from the Central Connecticut Health District in Wethersfield.
