NEW BRITAIN - The city has once again been named an “All-America City.”
For the second year in a row, the National Civic League gave the city this honor at its annual convention in Denver, Colo. Mayor Erin Stewart made the announcement at New Britain High School’s graduation ceremony Friday afternoon.
“We are extremely excited that the National Civic League has recognized the efforts we are making - in partnership with a broad cross-section of stakeholders - in our community to improve the success rate of our students, both now and in the future,” Stewart said via a press release.
This year, the National Civic League worked with the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading to recognize communities that have made measurable progress for low-income children in the areas of school readiness, school attendance, summer learning and grade-level reading: all key drivers for student success.
Led by the Coalition for New Britain’s Youth, a group of city officials, parents, educators, health and social service agencies, and other members of the community helped boost school attendance, reduce science, technology, engineering and math summer learning loss, and increase grade-level reading skills among children in the city.
“Collaborating across sectors to tackle problems in a community is not easy, but New Britain has shown that when the community commits to working collectively, we can make a difference,” Robin Sparks, executive director of the Coalition for New Britain’s Youth, said in a release from the city.
Twenty-seven communities from across the country were in the running to receive the coveted All-America City Award. Fifteen were given the honor Friday.
This is the second year New Britain has received the honor. Last year, New Britain was one of ten communities to receive the honor. The school was honored for reducing chronic school absenteeism last year, too, along with its work in addressing asthma and obesity in schoolchildren.
