NEW BRITAIN - St. Mary Church’s annual festival is taking place this weekend for the 12th year.

The festival at the Roman Catholic church is held each year in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption. It began on Friday with Mass and coronation of the Statue of Our Lady, followed by a multicultural celebration of the countries of Latin American, featuring food, dancing and other presentations.

Today from noon to 8 p.m. is the main event - a large outdoor festival with music, food, family-friendly entertainment, games, contests and a raffle.

Raffle tickets cost $5 and the drawing will be at 6 p.m. this afternoon. All prizes are Visa cash cards worth $1,500, $1,000, $700, $500 and $250.

All the food will be home cooked and representative of lands including Mexico, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and the Dominican Republic.

Kids can enjoy a bounce house and face-painting while older guests can listen to a singing contest, dance and learn about several community organizations.

“People will see a lot of the different parts of the community coming together, and showing their services,” said the church’s bookkeeper, Margarita Collazo.

She said hundreds of people come from nearby cities including Hartford, Meriden and New Haven to visit every year.

The festival wraps up on Sunday with a Mass beginning at 9 a.m. in English and at 11 a.m. in Spanish.

Collazo said all are welcome to attend the festival, and those that do will feel a sense of community that she referred to as “like a family.”

“Once you come, you’re not going to want to miss it in any of the coming years,” Collazo said.

St. Mary Church is at 544 Main St.

The featival will be held rain or shine. For additional information, call 860-229-4894.
