NEW BRITAIN -- Polish Falcons Nest 88 will be hosting an official banquet celebrating its 110th anniversary on Oct. 14, in the club’s new hall at 201 Washington St. in New Britain.

The Honorary Committee for the banquet includes: Mayor Erin Stewart; former Mayor Lucian Pawlak; Msgr. Daniel J. Plocharczyk, pastor of Sacred Heart Church; and the Rev. Dariusz Gosciniak, pastor of Holy Cross Church.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $55 per person, which includes a full dinner and dancing afterward to the music of Rytmy 95. Dinner will be provided by the Belvedere Restaurant and a cash bar will be available. Call the club for reservations at 860-225-9036.

Before the dinner and dancing, there will be a program including several speeches.

Along with Mayor Stewart, and former Mayors Tim Stewart and Lucian Pawlak, guests will include Maciej Golubiewski, the Consul General at the Polish Consulate in New York City.

Founded in 1907, Nest 88 has thrived under the leadership of 40 Nest presidents, through two World Wars, the Great Depression, and the turnover of four generations of volunteers.

In February 1907, in Lee Hall on Lafayette Street in New Britain, 26 Poles led by the first Nest 88 president, Waclaw Niedenthal, agreed to apply for a charter to form Nest 88. Its initial focus was sports, including baseball, soccer, golf and bowling.

In 1934, the building at 201 Washington St., which more than 350 members call home, was purchased. Nest 88 then began addressing social concerns by entertaining members with dances, with the biggest event of the year being the installation of officers and committee members each January.

Today, the Falcons Nest is still involved with sports, including soccer, running, bowling, golf, skiing, table tennis and hunting. The golf club plays in tournaments that benefit local schools and churches, while the Nest 88 Bowling Club participates and occasionally hosts the District V tournament.

In recent years, Nest 88 has also turned its attention to the needs of its community.

The Falcon Nest 88 Running Club has been involved yearly in races such as New Britain’s Breast Health Initiative, which benefits breast cancer research, along with the Corporate 5K in Hartford, which benefits Special Olympics.

Thanksgiving time finds Nest 88 collecting non-perishable food items for area food kitchens, and a yearly dinner/dance is held during which two students are awarded scholarships to help further their education.

Nest 88 members also celebrate and observe Polish religious traditions such as Swieconka, the sharing of the Oplatek and the Stations of the Cross procession, as well as participating in All Souls/All Saints Day at Sacred Heart Ceremony. The Nest can also be found at community events such as the Memorial Day parade.
