BERLIN - It’s full of older items, but it’s a new thing for Berlin.

Turnpike Antiques & Vintage recently held a ribbon cutting to celebrate its opening at 1660 Berlin Turnpike.

“We love ‘man cave’ decor and industrial primitive kind of items, but we have a little bit for everybody,” said Patrick Rhodes, manager of the store, who has always had a passion for history and studied the subject in college in Lynchburg, Va.

He says he has collected items through the years by picking them out at other antique stores and others selling their items to him at his store.

The store used to be on the shoreline, Rhodes said, but the area was saturated with such stores.

In addition to the traffic of the Berlin Turnpike, Rhodes said the open market for antique stores in Berlin made him want to relocate to the building that used to house Snookie’s restaurant, and a computer repair store and a liquor store.

“This road is the main reason,” said Rhodes.

Rhodes said what sets the shop apart is his ability to buy items as well as own all the items in the store, as opposed to leasing space to vendors, as in a flea market.

“Here, we’re working individually with the antiques and the customers,” said Rhodes.

As a way to stay modern, he said, the store is constantly updating Facebook, Craigslist and eBay to make any new inventory items available on the internet.

“He’s got a lot of rare stuff,” said Bill Traverse, a fellow antiques enthusiast who was checking out the store.

Chris Edge, the town’s economic development director, said, “I’m thrilled” about the opening of the first antique shop in the town. “It’s a destination location, it’s eclectic. It’s something new to add to our locally owned business mix.”

“Glad you’re here,” said Mayor Mark Kaczynski, who joked that he may be bringing by a few items of his own to sell to the store.
