NEW BRITAIN -National Discount Store on Main Street is closing and a two-day liquidation sale and public auction will begin today.
Items for sale include men’s, women’s and children’s clothing; boys and girls school uniforms; furniture; houseware; tools; hardware; giftware; toys and games; health and beauty aids; fixtures and equipment.
There will also be on-site and live internet bidding conducted by Aaron Posnik Auctioneers for the five-story, 54,000-square-foot building.
The building features a full basement and two elevators, one passenger and one freight. A 25,000-square-foot warehouse was added to the rear of the original building in 1942.
There are also 10 parking spaces and metered parking in the front and back.
Natan Stempler purchased the building through auction in 2005, according to a Herald article.
The street-level storefront owned by 222 Main Street LLC was previously occupied by BD’s, a beauty and discount store.
National Discount Store was only using approximately 10,000 square feet of the building.
Today and Wednesday, bidding and sales will begin at 10:30 a.m. Online bidding will be available at bidspotter.com during that time.
Attempts by The Herald to reach Stempler on Monday were unsuccessful.
Department of Economic Development Director Bill Carroll said he has spoken to Stempler, who told him that, for numerous reasons, it was time to close the store and that he felt the best route was to put the building up for auction.
“I view this as an opportunity for a user that will utilize the entire building. Currently, it is underutilized, as the first floor is the only floor occupied,” Carroll said.
He added, “We have had a number of interested investors in the past year but, unfortunately, a sale price could never be agreed.”
