BERLIN - It’s still called Headmasters, but there is a new headmistress in charge.

Janeth Steinberg is now the new owner of Headmasters LLC, 747 Farmington Ave.

“My vision for Headmasters LLC is to establish a hair and nail salon that is welcoming and inclusive to both the clients we service and the hair stylists and nail technicians that would like to join the team,” said the Colombia native who came to the United States 24 years ago.

She started working in housekeeping and banking before getting into the hair styling business.

With over 14 years of experience as a hair stylist, Steinberg said she worked two fulltime jobs while learning English and pursuing her cosmetology certification.

“It may sound cliché, but hard work truly pays off and I am very thankful,” said Steinberg.

She took over the business from Fred Balducci, who announced his plans to retire in 2015.

“She did an unbelievable job,” said Balducci. “Outside, inside, everything is top notch.”

The location, redesigned by Steinberg’s friend Samiar Hassan, features a new façade and new interior with seven chairs, compared to the previous seven.

Keeping the name was a way to preserve the foundation of the business Balducci started over 40 years ago, Steinberg said.

“Keeping the name was a way of honoring Fred’s legacy, all the while adopting a new modern concept for Headmasters LLC,” she said.

With three hair stylists, including Steinberg, and one nail technician, the hair salon offers haircuts, hair coloring, perms, highlights, blow drying, wash and sets and anything else related to hair.

Waxing is also offered, as is everything related to manicures and pedicures.

But what sets Headmasters apart is its chair rental service, Miguel Lopez, Steinberg’s son-in-law, said.

“Ultimately what she would like to do is inspire folks to own their own business and spread,” said Lopez. “It’s kind of a pollination effect.”

Hair stylists and nail technicians can rent a chair with a work space, personal locker, towels, shampoo and usage of common areas, with shared appliances included, all in an effort for to establish and market their own brand under the umbrella of Headmasters.

“She’s very nice,” said Wendy Nguyen, a nail technician who uses the rental service after starting in a Wal-Mart.

Clients of Steinberg who frequented the salon under Balducci and plan to continue, were at a recent ribbon cutting and open house.

“She’s the best hair dresser in the world, bar none,” said Henrietta Bernal. “It’s a great place … She’s got great hands … What more could you want in a hairdresser? Competency and creativity? She’s been able to maintain (after Balducci).”
