NEW BRITAIN - CTfastrak riders now have two more places to park in the city.
The state Department of Transportation announced Monday that CTfastrak customers can park free a block away from the bus station, at the Szczesny Garage, 35 Bank St. A new overflow lot across the street from East Street station is also open.
“The increasing popularity and use of the CTfastrak system has created a demand for additional parking,” DOT Commissioner James Redeker said in announcing the new parking areas. “In order to meet that demand and to ensure that this valuable service continues to see an increase in use, the department has been looking at several parking options and we believe we have found the best and most convenient solutions for our customers going forward.”
At Szczesny Garage, 100 spaces have been allocated for CTfastrak customers. Customers will need to show their CTfastrak tickets when leaving the parking garage. The overflow lot at 1360 East St. has 31 spaces set aside for CTfastrak customers.
“The city of New Britain is proud to work with our state partners to improve the experience for all CTfastrak riders,” Mayor Erin Stewart said. “It is our hope that this additional free parking will encourage riders to make greater use of CTfastrak and visit our downtown, which is close to a world class art museum, a vibrant business district, and many other attractions.”
CTfastrak began operation in March 2015. According to the DOT, average ridership on CTfastrak in the New Britain-Hartford corridor is about 19,000 passenger trips each weekday.
“CTfastrak has exceeded all expectations since its inception, but we will not rest on those numbers. We will continue to improve the experience of our customer in order to attract more riders and continue the economic development that we are seeing along the corridor,” said Richard Andreski, the DOT’s bureau chief of public transportation.
