NEW BRITAIN-A group of volunteers from several educational, social and civic organizations will host a press conference Wednesday to kickoff the fundraising drive for the sixth annual Hoops for Homeless basketball tournament.
Four new board members who will be joining the Hoops for Homeless committee will be announced at the press conference. Those new members include Jessica Hernandez, coordinator of Community Engagement at Central Connecticut State University; Karoline Wytrykowski of Community Mental Health Affiliates; Adrian Elliott of the New Britain Artists’ Coop; and Shawna Viola, a student at Central Connecticut State University.
There will also be a presentation ceremony announcing donations made by the New Britain Herald, Siracusa, and Zagorsky Zagorsky & Galske PC.
Hoops for Homeless three-on-three basketball tournament will be held on Saturday, April 28. The goal of the event is to raise awareness about homelessness and raising the financial means necessary to end homelessness of children and families in the community.
This year’s tournament will be followed by a Sunday Brunch Celebration hosted by University of Cincinnati Women’s Basketball Coach Jamelle Elliott, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Unity Lodge, 10 Mason Dr.
The bunch is open to the public for a nominal fee to be announced.
Hoops for Homeless is run by a 14-member board of volunteers, representing local non-profit organizations including the Friendship Service Center, Prudence Crandall Center, New Britain Boys and Girls Club, New Britain Public Schools, New Britain Fire Department, Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), and the New Britain Downtown District.
The press conference will take place at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at the New Britain Downtown District Office, 66 W. Main St.
