NEW BRITAIN – Although the official opening of the 2018 Little Poland Festival is slated for Sunday, the festival carnival will be starting tonight as a fun kick-off to the larger event, organizers said.
The festival carnival at the Pulaski Club on Grove Street starts at 5 p.m. tonight until 10 p.m. and then reopens from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
The carnival features rides and games from RW Commerford and Son, an outfit that has ties to the city, Pawlak said. “Tim Commerford’s wife Margaret has roots in New Britain,” Pawlak said. “It’s not a big moneymaker for them but it’s become a significant part of our Little Poland Festival.”
Organizers of the festival decided to add the carnival a few years ago as a way of making sure children enjoy the event as much as their parents, Pawlak said. “There was nothing for kids to do,” he said. “The carnival focuses on just rides and games with a focus on kids.”
The Commerfords have made sure to provide exciting rides and activities for the kids despite the tight quarters and uneven ground in the Pulaski Club parking lot, he said. “They go through a lot to be a part of this community,” Pawlak said.
Like the festival, visitors attending the carnival can park in the area on Friday and Saturday evening. The Little Poland Festival opens Sunday morning at 10 a.m. and runs through 7 p.m. on Broad Street.
