BRISTOL – Shepard Meadows Equestrian Center, Inc. will hold its annual Farmyard Party on Sept. 17 while also celebrating the raising of a new, expanded barn and learning center building.

The third annual Farmyard Party will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Equestrian Center at 733 Hill Street for adults 21 and older. The event will include a barbecue supplied by Mission Barbecue, live music from “The Hill Street Project”, a silent auction and a cash bar.

Shelly Whitlock-Pope, executive director of Shepard Meadows, said that the Farmyard Party is the Equestrian Center’s major fundraiser of the year.

“We love having our Farmyard Party here,” she said. “It’s a very relaxed event where people can wander our trails, visit with the horses, walk around and meet new people.”

In the past two years, coming out of the pandemic, the Farmyard Party sold all tickets and drew crowds of 100 and 150 people respectively. This year, Whitlock-Pope said, she hopes to have at least 200 people attend.

“Come out, explore and have a great time,” she said.

Whitlock-Pope added that several local businesses have donated items for the silent auction this year.

The following Monday after the Farmyard Party, construction will begin on Shepard Meadows’ new barn and learning center.

“This past couple of years, our programs have grown so much,” said Whitlock-Pope. “Our current barn allows for only two horses at a time. This new barn will be able to accommodate five horses and those working with them. It will be a magnificent, beautiful barn.”

Whitlock-Pope said that she hopes that the barn and learning center will help make Shepard Meadows into “destination”, like the city’s museums. She added that she hopes it will be utilized by other community organizations for their programs as well.

Tickets to the Farmyard Party are $75 per person.

To purchase tickets, visit or mail a check payable to Shepard Meadows to SMEC, 733 Hill Street, Bristol, CT, 06010. Those who mail a check are asked to include the names of attendees and their contact information.
