BRISTOL - In the first game on its new turf field, Bristol Central’s Josh Cordero made sure to get his senior season off to a strong start.

Behind a pair of goals from Cordero, Bristol Central overcame an early first half goal by Plainville to come out on top 3-1 on Tuesday evening.

Going into the second half tied 1-1, Diego Naranjo put Bristol Central up 6:40 in with a strike from about 35 yards out that beat Plainville goalie Sergio Zaldivar to his left side.

With the lead in hand, Cordero struck for his second goal of the game 20:32 in on an open-net opportunity as Zaldivar came out of net, as he did often during the game.

“Coming out we were definitely shaken by the fact that we were playing Plainville,” Cordero said. “We knew that they were going to be a tough competitor. Just the momentum from my first goal and then Diego’s goal made us feel that we got this.”

Zaldivar did everything he could to keep Plainville in the game as Bristol Central got many strong offensive opportunities.

Although Plainville was held to just one goal, its performance was also solid.

Dane Stephens set the tone for Plainville right out of the gate, scoring just 2:08 into the game.

“They’re a really good side,” Bristol Central head coach Nate Jandreau said.

“They play really well together. They know each other and those guys are always playing with each other. They can connect with the best of them.”

Following the Stephens goal, it was all Bristol Central.

Cordero scored a few minutes after Stephens to tie the game.

The rest of the first half was very defensively competitive as neither team had a strong opportunity.

“I was glad. At 1-1, I thought we were where we need to be,” Plainville head coach Tim Brown said. “Second half I was pleased with our performance, too. Other than the two goals they had, I thought we had more of the play in the second half. Only difference is they capitalized on their opportunities.”

Plainville had some good opportunities to score in the second half. The best chance came from Stepehens, with a free kick that he put just over the net.

“I think we need to work on closing out a game more than anything,” Naranjo said. “Other than that we looked pretty good.”

With the win, Bristol Central starts out the season 1-0. The loss drops Plainville to 1-1.

Bristol Central will look to continue building off of the strong momentum that was established at the end of last season.

Both teams had great respect for the other side and believe that the physicality shown by each team throughout the game will only prove to be beneficial as the season goes on.

“It was a tough game, they played hard and we played hard,” Brown said. “Hats off to them.”
