ENFIELD- On a cold fall night the offense came early and often for the New Britain football team, as it got off to a 20-0 lead to begin the game.

It didn’t take long for Enfield to warm up, though, as the Eagles put up 12 unanswered points to close out the first half down a manageable eight points.

The second half brought even more offensive fireworks, but the Hurricanes escaped with a win, and Shawn Robinson’s four touchdowns paved the way to a 44-38 victory on Friday night for New Britain.

New Britain set the tone in the first half receiving the kickoff to start the game. Robinson took the opening kickoff 65 yards for a score and a Tyree Pinnock extra point put the Hurricanes up 7-0 right away.

The Hurricanes weren’t done and Robinson continued to lead the way.

On the first offensive possession of the game for New Britain Robinson ripped off a 47-yard run to set the Hurricanes up on the Enfield 16 yard line.

After a one-yard run by Kaiyonn Gunn it was Robinson again with a big 14 yard run.

With a first and goal to go Robinson finished it off as he ran for a three-yard touchdown run and the Hurricanes went up 14-0 with 6:38 left in the first quarter.

They weren’t done yet.

Robinson took his first touch on the next possession for New Britain 27 yards for a touchdown run and with the 20-0 lead everything was in place for the Hurricanes to blow out the Eagles.

Taking over at its own 35 yard line Enfield drove down the field and a big 56 yard run by the Eagles quarterback Mason Dumas set up Enfield with a 1st and goal that Dumas found receiver Xavier Copening for a four-yard touchdown pass.

It didn’t take long for Enfield to get the ball back as it recovered a New Britain fumble and on the first play with the ball back Dumas found Wyatt Raymond streaking down the field for a 58 yard touchdown pass.

Just like that a 20-point deficit was cut to eight and both teams went to the half with the score 20-12.

After recovering a fumble on Enfield’s first possession, the Hurricanes started the second half just like the first half as Taiyon Gunn ran it in for a score on a first and goal with 7:43 left in the quarter.

Enfield answered right back with Dumas tossing another touchdown to Copening, this one a six-yard touchdown pass.

Another Hurricanes fumble gave the Eagles the ball back down 28-20 and Dumas ran in an 11-yard touchdown run putting Enfield within two points with the fourth quarter just about to begin.

Before the third quarter could end Robinson ran his second kickoff return back for a 60-yard touchdown and then ran in the extra point to give the Hurricanes some breathing room at 36-26.

On the first drive of the fourth quarter for either team the Eagles brought the game within a touchdown again with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Brendan DeBarber.

After the failed extra two-point try New Britain led 36-32 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game.

The back and forth offense continued as the Hurricanes scored again on their next possession, this time quarterback Jahfari Newman got in on the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run and Robinson ran in the two-point conversion to put New Britain up 44-32 and time was running out for the Eagles with the clock reading 5:52.

On the ensuing kickoff it seemed that Enfield was going to get the quick score it needed as Copening returned the kickoff for a score but it was called back on a holding penalty bringing the ball back to the Enfield 19 yard line.

Though, the Eagles still delivered a score as Dumas threw a five-yard touchdown pass to DeBarber and Enfield was down 44-38 with three minutes left in the game.

The Hurricanes couldn’t get a first down and had to punt the ball back to the Eagles with 1:01 left and from their own 21-yard line.

Time ran out as New Britain got its fourth win of the season, moving to 4-5 on the year with one game left to finish with a .500 record.
