NEW BRITAIN - The Nutmeg State Games is just days away from celebrating a milestone.
This Saturday will officially kickoff the Games 30th year. It is also the ninth consecutive year it will be hosted by the city of New Britain. Overall, more than 7,000 athletes, 1,000 volunteers and 25,000 spectators are expected to take part in the events which run through Aug. 5.
The opening weekend’s events will feature four individual sports - figure skating, track, and field, gymnastics, golf and BMX - as well as roller hockey. The figure skating competition will take place on Saturday morning at the Newington Arena with over 150 competitors set to compete for the gold, silver and bronze medals beginning at 8 a.m.
The track and field meet begins at 8 a.m. with the field events - long jump, high jump, hammer throw, javelin and shot put - followed by track events starting at 10:30 a.m. at the New Britain’s Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. This meet will feature over 600 participants from around the state.
Gymnastics will take place at New Britain High School and will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Participants include gymnasts at Levels 1-9, Silver ECEL, and Bronze ECEL.
The first part 1 of the Nutmeg Games roller hockey tournament will take place on both Saturday and Sunday at Trinity’s Koeppel Community Sports Center in Hartford. Over 100 athletes on 10 teams will compete in 10U, 12U and 14U tournaments.
After a nine-year hiatus, the BMX tournament returns. Held at Falcon BMX Park in Meriden, the competition will kick off at 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon with Novice, Intermediate, Expert Girl and Cruiser divisions.
The opening weekend’s events will conclude on Sunday at New Britain’s Stanley Golf Course with the youth golf tournament. Both the 16U and 18U divisions will compete in an 18-hole tournament, while the 10U, 12U and 14U age groups will play nine holes. The golf competitions are set to tee off at 12:30 p.m.
