Sports Roundup: Southington girls basketball uses huge first quarter to cruise to win over Avon

SOUTHINGTON - The Southington girls basketball team took control early in its game against Avon on Monday night and cruised to a 57-32 win. The Blue Knights outscored the Falcons 22-4 in the opening frame and went on to outscore Avon in every quarter en route to the teams ninth win of the season.

Maggie Meehan led the way for Southington as she scored a game-high 19 points while making five three-pointers. Hartlee Meier also chipped in with 18 points of her own as she knocked down three shots from beyond the three-point line.

University 48, Goodwin Tech 22: The Goodwin Tech girls basketball team was done in by a rough second quarter in its 48-22 loss to University on Monday afternoon. The Gladiators were outscored 23-2 in the frame and that pretty much put the game away. Goodwin Tech didn’t have a player score in double-figures but the team was led by Tanija Russell, who scored nine points. The Gladiators remain one win away from qualifying for the postseason with their 7-10 record.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Goodwin Tech 68, University 65: The Goodwin Tech boys basketball team took a 16 point lead into halftime against University on Monday night and hold on late for its 10th win of the season. Francisco Santiago led the way for the Gladiators as he had a game-high 20 points and he was one of four Goodwin Tech players to score in double-figures. Josh Peeples (15), Luis Aguiar (15) and Damion Martin were the other double-digit scorers in the win.
