NEW BRITAIN - The Vinal Tech softball team entered its game against Goodwin Tech having scored 28 runs in each of its last three games, all resulting in victories.

Then Val Ramirez stepped in the circle for the Gladiators, and silenced the Hawks’ red-hot bats.

Ramirez tossed a complete game and struck out 14 batters in a 14-3 win for Goodwin Tech on Thursday afternoon. Ramirez also picked up a couple of hits at the plate and drove in a pair of runs in her all-around sparkling performance.

The Gladiators’ offensive outburst was also led by Bianca Olivo and Soannie Arroyo, who each recorded three hits, while Arroyo added 4 RBI to lead Goodwin Tech to its second win in a row.

Goodwin Tech 257, Vinal Tech 264: Jacob Beatty shined for Vinal Tech in a medal-earning performance, but while he finished nine strokes ahead of Goodwin Tech’s best finisher, a balanced performance from the Gladiators was enough to overcome the deficit.

Goodwin Tech earned its first win of the season thanks to four golfers who all finished below 70, with Xavier Irizarry leading the group with a score of 62. Cristian Moline shot a 63, while Julien Stepien recorded a 65 to get the Gladiators in the win column.
