Sports Roundup: Furious Prince Tech rally spoils Goodwin Tech girls volleyball's quest for second straight win

NEW BRITAIN - The Goodwin Tech girls volleyball team appeared to be on its way to a second straight win on Wednesday afternoon, but Prince Tech quickly spoiled a promising start with a furious comeback.

Having dropped the first two sets, Prince Tech rallied to win three straight, including a dramatic 15-12 win in the decisive fifth set, to shock the Gladiators 3-2 (21-25, 24-26, 25-14, 25-10, 15-12).

Ada Guzman led Goodwin Tech with 12 service points, while adding six service aces and 10 digs. Korina Trammell and Natalie Delarosa also chipped in with eight and seven service points, respectively.

The Gladiators scratched through the first two sets, winning by a combined six points before Prince Tech grabbed momentum and never gave it back, dropping Goodwin Tech’s season record to 1-2.

New Britain 3, Wethersfield 1: After two straight losses to open the season, the Hurricanes bounced back with their first win of the year, taking down the Eagles 3-1 on Wednesday.

“They played very well,” New Britain head coach Michelle Abraham said. “I’m very pleased. They communicated a lot better.”

Maleah Echevarria logged 10 digs and six service points for the Hurricanes, while Raven Jarrett had a monster performance that included 15 kills, 16 service points and six service aces. Audrey Belliveau dished out 14 assists, while Nataly Hernandez picked up five kills in the victory.

Wethersfield was led by 11 kills from Megan Kelleher.

Southington 3, Hall 0: The Blue Knights rolled to victory on Wednesday, securing a sweep (25-8, 25-16, 25-12) of Hall in a match where Southington won each set by at least nine points.

Brooke Cooney led the Blue Knights with nine kills, whiles Rachel Possidento logged seven to go along with her two blocks. Mackenzie Coppola served up 16 assists and four service aces, while Kaley Smith led the way defensively with 11 digs in the winning effort.
