HARTFORD - The Newington girls basketball team labored through an uncharacteristic slow start on Tuesday night against Bulkeley, but once the second quarter began, the Indians were back to looking like their dominant selves.
Newington turned a 9-4 deficit into an eight-point halftime lead and never looked back, rolling the rest of the way to a 54-32 win. Ashanti Frazier led the way with 18 points as she inches closer to a career milestone, now just eight points away from 1,000.
Sabrina Soler dropped 15 points in the win, while grabbing seven rebounds. Marlie Zocco chipped in five points to go along with her six rebounds and six steals.
Tahjae Young led the Bulldogs with 20 points.
Goodwin Tech 34, Vinal Tech 8: The Gladiators dropped the defensive hammer on Tuesday, holding Vinal Tech to just two points in the first half to run away with an easy victory.
Ericka Aponte led Goodwin Tech with 12 points, while Aiyana Montes also finished in double figures, scoring 10 points to help the Gladiators get back to .500 on the season.
Plainville 102.5, Newington 72.5: The Blue Devils picked up their first win of the season thanks to a total of 45 best times from 23 different swimmers.
“Overall, it was a very strong day for us,” head coach Chris Zagorski said.
Nate Lyman and Joe Michalic were both double winners for Plainville. Lyman took first in the 200 and 500 freestyles, while Michalic placed first in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly, an event he qualified for state in.
Other winners for the Blue Devils included Brandon Paznokas in the 100 backstroke, Matt Lagassey in the 100 breaststroke (an event he qualified for states in) and the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.
Colin Blake and Nico Fasold came in second and third in the 200 IM to sweep the top three spots.
