Roundup: Innovation girls volleyball opens season with win over Capital Prep

Innovation volleyball started its season off with a win Monday night, defeated Capital Prep 3-1.

The Ravens battled to win the first set and edged out Capital Prep 26-24. That momentum carried them to an easier 25-15 win in the second set, but they were unable to complete the sweep.

Capital Prep forced a fourth set by winning the third 25-22, but could not get to a fifth set as Innovation won the fourth set 25-20. Junior Patrice Broughton led the team with six kills and nine service ace while senior Katherine Palombizio had five digs and junior Ciara Cardona had seven assists.

Head coach Matt Lance said his team’s success was a product of its execution and serve receive and that they look their best when they do those things well. The Ravens next game is Wednesday on the road against Canton at 6 p.m.

Southington 3, RHAM 0: The Blue Knights took care of RHAM with the shutout victory.

Haley Weiner had 27 assists while Gabby Ferreira, Adriana Palmieri and Morgan Birdsey combined for 24 kills. Makenzie Marek and Emma Pfanzelt finished with 12 digs in total.

Southington will visit St. Joseph on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Goodwin Tech 3, Windham Tech 0: The Gladiators won its second straight match to improve to 2-1 this season.

Rachael Astacio had 12 service points and five aces, Maribel Gonzalez garnered 15 service points, five kills, two blocks and Trinity Chambers contributed eight assists and five kills.

Goodwin Tech will visit Prince Tech on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.

Bristol Eastern 3, Newington 0: The Lancers picked up their second win in a row Monday night with a sweep of the Nor'easters, their first sweep of the season.

All three sets were competitive as Newington scored at least 19 points in all three and pushed the second set to a 26-24 final score in favor of Eastern. The Lancers won the final set 25-21 and improved their record to 2-1 to start the 2021 season.

Senior Hannah Webber led Eastern with 13 kills while senior Alex Shorette notched eight digs and senior Abby Jones posted 19 assists. Newington junior Maya Kozlowski finished with four kills and three blocks and senior Kayla Parker accumulated seven digs.

The Lancers will return to the court Wednesday to host Wolcott while the Nor'easters will travel to Berlin on Tuesday.


Berlin 4, Bristol Eastern 3: Ciara Collins’ hat trick wasn’t enough as the Lancers fell to the Redcoats on Monday at Sage Park.

Kylie Jefferson, Clare McGeever, Alyssa O'Leary and Julia Salina potted goals for Berlin, which earned its first win of the season. Natalia Chorzepa also made six saves in net for the Redcoats.

Berlin (1-1) will visit Wethersfield on Friday at 3:30 p.m.


Newington 9, Bloomfield 1: Two goals from Jason Welch and Christian Amaral powered the Nor’easters in its home-opening victory.

Tyler Ferreira, Sebastian Baez and Mike Padilla also scored for Newington while Beckham Alderucci (two), Amaral and Ferreira recorded assists.

Bloomfield put two goals in its own net to go along with its only goal of the game from Jahmeen Harrigan.

Gavin Williams and Dakota Hawes each made a save for the Nor’easters while Jesse Jenkins picked up 11 saves for Bloomfield.

Newington will next host E.O. Smith on Friday at 3:45 p.m.


Bristol Central 15 Platt 50, Bristol Central 27 Berlin 28, Berlin 15 Platt 50: Bristol Central beat Platt and Berlin in a tri-meet at Hubbard Park on Monday.

Frankie Porrini won the race in 16:43, Berlin’s Ben Fisler took second place in 17:55 and Chris Roy from Central placed third at 18:58.

Both Central and Berlin placed five runners in the top 10, but it was the Rams who squeaked out the one-point win.

Central will host Middletown and Plainville on Sept. 21 at Rockwell Park at 3:45 p.m. Berlin will visit Lewis Mill for a tri-meet with Bristol Eastern on Sept. 21 at 3:45 p.m.


Berlin 15 Bristol Central 50, Berlin 15 Platt 50, Bristol Central 15 Platt 50: Berlin picked up perfect scores in its tri-meet win at Hubbard Park on Monday.

The Redcoats posted the first six runners of the race in Natalia Kmita (22:34), Taylor Desnarais (22:49), Claudia Jankovich, Nadia Malec (24:02), Nina Garofalo (24:30) and Victoria Shayova (25:00).

Central’s top two runners finished in sixth and seventh place in Maura Waters (25:13) and Sophia Stark (25:52)

Central will host Middletown and Plainville on Sept. 21 at Rockwell Park at 3:45 p.m. Berlin will visit Lewis Mill for a tri-meet with Bristol Eastern on Sept. 21 at 3:45 p.m.
