Roundup: Newington girls hoops roll to win, NB boys fall to East Catholic

GLASTONBURY – Newington girls basketball picked up a win Thursday night, beating Glastonbury 47-23.

Newington ran away with the game in the first half, entering halftime ahead 31-9. The Nor’easters were led in scoring by Lilly Ferguson’s 14 points and 10 points from Bela Cucuta.

Kendall Miller had a seven-rebound, six-point, three-assist and three-steal game.

Leading for Glastonbury in scoring was Gisel Astiasaran with nine points.

Plainville 65, Rocky Hill 41: Plainville boys basketball snapped a five-game losing skid Thursday night, winning 65-41 over Rocky Hill.

Joe Vasquez was the leader in points for the night, scoring 23 points for Plainville. Dylan Brewer and Cam Lamothe each had 14 points while Brennan Staubley and Brady Wieczorek had nine and five points each, respectively.

Leading in scoring for Rocky Hill was Jake Polites with 10 points.

SMSA 65, Innovation, 31: Innovation boys basketball lost Thursday night, losing to SMSA in a 65-31 final.

Innovation trailed by 14 through the first quarter and entered halftime down 33-11. Innovation outscored SMSA in only one quarter, the fourth at 13-11.

SMSA’s Kemani Thompson dropped 30 points, the game-high. Jayden Newell-Kemp had 12 points to lead the Ravens.

Tyvonn Thompson and Amir Bolden each had four points as the next highest behind Newell-Kemp.

Twenty eight and 20 points second and third quarters (respectively) elevated East Catholic into blowout territory, leading to NB dropping its first game since Dec. 20.

Demari Johnson led the Hurricanes with 15 points and Dennis Forbes scored 10 poinys for New Britain.

Leading the scoring in the game was Rob Elliot of East Catholic with 24 points.
