To the Editor:

Thursday, May 4, is International Firefighters Day, also celebrated as St. Florian’s Day. He is the patron saint of all firefighters. It is a day to support our firefighters worldwide and show our appreciation. It is a perfect day to stop into a fire house and say thank you.

In honor of all those in the fire service, specifically our New Britain Fire Department, I want to recognize and celebrate every one of you … present, past and those whose lives have been lost. Thank you for your selflessness, willingly offering to place your life on the line for another, at any given moment. I and, I am certain, the entire New Britain community, are most grateful for your dedication, extraordinary commitment, remarkable courage and brave actions every day to protect and save lives and property. You make a difference and are appreciated!

Happy International Firefighters Day to the New Britain Fire Department and, always, thank you.

Sharon Baretta, fire commissioner, New Britain
