To the Editor:

Local elections matter! Please support the Democratic candidates for Board of Education: Becky Tyrrell, Rebecca Martinez and Kathleen Wells.

Strong public schools produce the educated work force required to keep us moving forward as a nation. Education reduces government reliance and increases revenues. As a homeowner, I understand the biggest influence on home prices is the school system.

We must elect public officials who are committed to public education. They must understand how to produce responsible budgets while recognizing the value in that budget.

Becky Tyrrell has been a tireless supporter of our children for 16 years as a BOE member and as an active parent when her daughters were in school. Becky has been a mentor to many new BOE members including myself. Her exemplary work has been recognized by the CABE and we need her experience on the BOE during these uncertain times we are facing on the state level.

Rebecca Martinez is an involved parent serving on the Wheeler PTO with two sons in school. She was instrumental in the success of the Wheeler School Project referendum and is a strong advocate for the Plainville Family Resource Network. A pediatric nurse, Rebecca has committed her life to children and she will bring that same level of dedication to all our students.

Kathleen Wells has a career helping families navigate the judicial system as a Child Support Officer. The desire to support families and a commitment to public education for all children is what motivated Kathy to run as a first time BOE candidate. Her children excelled in Plainville schools and having known Kathy for many years, I know that she seeks that success for all our children.

These candidates possess the high level of clear thinking, dedication and commitment required of effective members of the Board of Education and I urge you to support them on November 7th.
