To the Editor:
It was of no surprise to hear that a fellow Newington resident and friend was interested in joining the Board of Education. Forrest Helvie would be a valuable member for this town position.
Forrest has a background in education and is in tune with how the school system runs. He understands what our children need to succeed and knows the tools to help foster their thirst for knowledge. After talking with him, you will quickly learn that he has a passion for being an educator and advocate for students.
I have recently learned that he has already been involved in programs such as: funding our high school academics, funding for universal pre-K, serving as members on the NPS strategic planning committee, the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) committee and Safe School Climate committee.
He has shown that he is truly invested in our town and our school system. In addition to all of the above, he is able to find time to be a Scout leader for his two boys and he is also military veteran. Forrest has volunteered his time on field trips for both of his children and participated in their fourth grade picnic activities. He understands the need to be involved with kids and the school as well as the importance of communication with schools and parents.
Forrest Helvie is a well rounded, intelligent individual. I would have full confidence in him joining the Newington Board of Education and advocating for our children.
