To the Editor:

I am writing to let Newington residents know why they should vote for the Republicans to “Keep it Going” for another two years. The six of us have worked hard to ensure that Newington continues to grow and thrive in a way that is responsible and sustainable.

We worked with the town manager to develop COVID operating strategies to protect not only our residents but our workforce. Additionally, we eliminated a part-time $90,000 per year Economic Development Consultant and placed economic development in the hands of the Town Manager and his existing staff. This approach has been very successful, saving the town over $100K annually in staffing costs, while at the same time yielding conservatively almost $230 million in economic growth. This positively impacts our grand list and decreases your tax burden.

We put the Anna Reynolds school project out to referendum to allow you a voice. Once we knew the community was on board, we made sure steps were completed to secure state funding for over 50% of the cost of the project.

Our Republican team acknowledges that Open Space is just as important as development. We increased town owned open space by approximately 30 acres and strengthened the Land Acquisition Funding Ordinance.

We managed to re-allocate important assets and decrease excess in order to deliver a mill rate decrease for two consecutive years.

We commissioned a comprehensive study of all town and board of education facilities and revised our capital improvement plan. As a result, we now have a 5-year strategic plan to proactively address our maintenance and infrastructure needs, instead of reacting to problems when they arise.

We began a Solar Energy initiative that includes town and board of education buildings.

We fully funded our police, fire and EMS and stand behind them 100% in order to ensure public safety.

In response to increasing crime, in December 2020 we formally demanded action from our state legislators to address public safety concerns, and we work closely with our PD [police department] to ensure that their needs are met in the fight against crime.

We have started so many great programs and initiatives and feel strongly that we have Newington moving forward in a positive direction for all. If you agree, please vote for myself and my entire Republican Team on Nov. 2.

Mayor Beth A. DelBuono
