To the Editor:

Newington Parks & Recreation hung a beautiful banner on Willard Avenue, just outside the Skatepark, honoring Newington veterans.

The banner gives the impression that the town is honoring ALL Newington veterans, and listed their names in alphabetical order.  But my name is not on the banner.  I am not being honored as a Newington veteran.  I served in Viet Nam in 1966.  I am a war veteran that sacrificed for the country, gave up two years of my life to the war, after being drafted.

So I called Parks & Rec to ask why I am not being honored on the banner?  After a discussion, I got the message that only those veterans that registered, and paid a $$$ fee, are being honored as Newington veterans on the banner.  I will need to pay a $$$ fee to be honored.  The banner is misleading, because it gives the impression that ALL Newington veterans are listed. Not true.

The message I got in talking to Parks & Rec is that only those veterans that registered, and paid a $$$ fee, are being honored as Newington veterans on the banner. I guess going to a war zone in Viet Nam is not "fee" enough to be a Newington veteran.
