BERLIN - When she was a child, Dr. Anshu Kumar’s father took her out to lunch and asked her what she wanted to do.

After eliminating a plethora of options, the two arrived on being a dentist and several years later, she’s running her own business able to provide her genuine care to help patients.

“It’s kind of cheesy, but their best interest really means a lot,” said Kumar, who is originally from Michigan but grew up in Guilford.

With her own practice now, Bright Smile Dentistry, at 211 New Britain Road, Suite 204, Kumar offers a little bit of everything to make sure patients are satisfied.

“We do cosmetic dentistry in the general sense. We do root canals, cleanings and extractions and refer out anything that isn’t in our scope,” she says.

And that’s what sets Kumar’s business apart from other dentists, her ability to reach out to her network of specialists that she trusts, as a way to make sure patients receive the best care possible.

“I believe in doing everything the right way, so I’m not going to wing it,” said Kumar. “More so than anything else do I want the right treatment for the patient and want them to be as comfortable as possible. We take so much time to explain what we are doing, why are doing it.”

With a close-knit staff that includes Berlin locals who were with the previous doctor, Gary Volz, the practice is currently undergoing renovations to make the office warm, inviting and open, including comfortable chairs for patients while work is done.

“My staff is great,” said Kumar.

As a way to stay modern, Kumar said, her practice is all digital with their X-rays and she is constantly undergoing continuing education. She recently joined the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and is a member of the American Dental Association and Connecticut State Dental Association to receive materials.

“Everything in dentistry is materials,” said Kumar. “You can slap on whatever you want but if it’s not something tested to work well with tooth structure and wear patterns it’s going to deteriorate.”

Going forward Kumar said her practice is looking at digital impressions and avoiding the previous method of using putty.

At the end of the day, Kumar said of her patients, “I want them to know my biggest priority is them.”
