BERLIN - A family-owned business that offers quality work and excellent customer service without cutting corners, Kensington Auto Service is at 89 Harding St. and is run by Lenny Tubbs, who started it in the 1980s, when he and his wife pooled their savings.

“I’ve been on my own since I was 15 years old,” said Tubbs. “I learned to work on cars. That’s how I was able to make it and stay in school.”

With experience from working at other garages before starting his own, Tubbs now offers auto repair work on everything from brakes to transmissions on all models.

“Customer service is a priority,” said Tubbs on what sets his shop apart from others.

Tubbs related a previous experience with a customer, in which a woman thought she had been overcharged on her bill since the part was only a minimal portion of the total cost.

After Tubbs took the time to explain why the bill came out the way it did, and showed the customer of the car the labor it took to install the part, she understood and was satisfied with the job.

“They rely on us,” said Tubbs of the relationship between customers and his technicians.

The shop, with an eight-bay garage and four technicians, including one of his five children, is constantly staying up to date with its equipment and diagnostic information through continued training and monthly manufacturer bulletins.

“Information is key,” said Tubbs, particularly with computerized and evolving car technology.

Expanding customization for parts such as exhaust pipes and accessory installation services, such as Nerf bars, particularly for trucks and vans, are ways Tubbs is looking at growing the business. That, and continuing the same great service he always has provided.

“It’s always about showing how to help (customers),” said Tubbs.

A member of the Zoning Board of Appeals and president of the Berlin Lions Club, Tubbs takes his commitment to helping others outside his business.

“We may not always be the cheapest, but I’ll be damned if somebody else can stand by their service like we do,” said Tubbs.
