NEWINGTON - For Joe Allen, establishing a Newington location of Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Centers and bringing the services to the town’s people had always been the dream.

“I wanted the autonomy to practice in a community where I could really help folks who lived in the area and be able to bring in some of the specialties that I had,” Allen, who is director of the Newington office he opened in 2016, said. “It gives me the opportunity to reach a lot of folks I see in the community. This was something that I wanted to do upon joining the organization.”

Part of a state-wide association, Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Centers Newington (PTSMC Newington), does more than just provide physical therapy and sports medicine. Allen stated that the name is “a bit of a misnomer,” as the two services aren’t all that PTSMC Newington does.

“We work with a lot of patients for balance and vestibular issues. We work with younger patients for sports-related injuries. We work with workmen’s compensation to get people back to work,” Allen listed. “[Sports medicine and physical therapy are] a small subset of what we actually do.”

Additionally, Allen makes sure to include PTSMC Newington in local events. “Being in touch with the community,” he explained, is highly important to him. He and the office’s other physical therapists go to gyms in the area to assist athletes, as well as attend happenings like road races to stretch runners before and after they sprint toward the finish line.

“We always participate. [We want to develop] relationships with people so when they think of their physical therapist, they don’t think about going to physical therapy, but think about going to their physical therapist,” Allen elaborated.

Even the equipment at PTSMC Newington has undergone improvements to ensure that the connection between the clinic and the community is there and up-to-date, allowing for communication through email and text. Allen said he and the other physical therapists can even send clients exercise videos.

“We can provide them home exercise programs with videos so they can not only see the exercises that they should be doing, but they can review them in video format from their smartphone or computers,” he stated.

But what Allen really wants people to know is that anyone is welcome to receive services from PTSMC Newington. No prescription is needed and all insurance is accepted. Self-pay options are also available.

“It eliminates the middleman and the awkwardness of seeing your physician. They can just come. We’ll see anyone,” Allen said.

Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Centers Newington is located at 64 Market Square. Appointments can be made online at or by calling 860-881-2928.
