NEW BRITAIN - Kyle Simon ended the long weekend for the New Britain Bees with four pitches.

The Bees right-hander struck out Ozney Gullien for the final out to help New Britain beat the Bridgeport Bluefish 2-1 to split Sunday’s doubleheader, the second one in as many days. The Bees lost the first game of the afternoon 5-2.

After winning three of four, it is New Britain’s first series win at home since July 5 before the All-Star break.

Simon tossed a seven-inning complete game of one-run ball. He gave up five hits, struck out four and walked none. Simon (9-10) has now collected wins in his last three outings, two of which have been complete games.

His lone mistake of the afternoon came in the top of the second when he gave up a solo home run to Gustavo Molina. But New Britain responded in the bottom of the frame thanks in part to three straight hits and a little help from Bridgeport starter Matt Quintana.

With one out, Jamar Walton doubled to center field and was followed up with a single from Jordan Hinshaw. After Walton scored on an error from Quintana (0-10), Yusuke Kajjimoto slapped a single to right field to bring home the winning run in Hinshaw.

All seven of the Bees hits came from Walton, Hinshaw and Kajimoto. Hinsahw went 3-for-3.

Nate Roe made his first start of the season in Game 1. The right-hander surrendered five runs - four earned - and nine hits in three-plus innings of work. The Bluefish scored two runs in the first, one in the second and another two in the fourth. New Britain’s two runs came in the third on a Craig Maddox single.

The Bees will now have a day off before starting another series with Bridgeport, this one three games, on Tuesday.
