NEW BRITAIN - The New Britain Bees continue to build what they hope is a title-contending roster.
The team announced the signings of infielders Deibinson Romero and Angelys Nina Tuesday afternoon.
“Both these players add important depth to our infield,” Bees general manager Brad Smith said in a statement. “Deibinson will bring a strong bat to our lineup, while providing solid defense and Angelys has proven he is a valuable asset in this league, playing multiple positions.”
Romero, in his 13th season of professional baseball, will be making his Atlantic League debut this season.
He comes over from the Mexican Baseball League, where Romero played 72 games for Veracruz and compiled a .268 batting average to go along with six home runs, 36 RBI and 29 runs scored.
It’s been a baseball path well travelled as Romero.
He began his professional career in 2006 in the Minnesota Twins farm system, where he reached triple-A in both 2013 and ’14, and was also part of the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees organizations in 2015 and 2016.
Romero owns a .263 batting average with 105 home runs, 584 RBI, 537 runs scored, and a .349 on-base percentage in 1,081 minor league games played.
Nina will be entering his third season in the Atlantic League.
Last year he played for the Bridgeport Bluefish and hit .264 with five home runs, 36 RBI and 28 runs scored in 77 games.
In 2007, Nina began his professional career as a member of the Colorado Rockies organization. After nine years spent with the Rockies farm system, Nina joined the Philadelphia Phillies’ stystem. Similar to Romero, triple-A ball was the highest level Nina reached, as he played at that level from 2014-16.
Nina had a more productive minor league career, hitting .281 with 52 home runs, 447 RBI, 439 runs scored and 142 stolen based in 972 games.
