High Point, N.C. - It hasn’t quite been the first week and a half of the season the New Britain Bees were hoping for to start the year.
Just 3-7 through the first 10 games of the schedule, the Bees were still looking for their first series win entering Wednesday. They almost didn’t get it before Jonathan Galvez stepped to the plate.
The left fielder hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Deibinson Romero in the top of the 10th inning to help give the New Britain an 8-7 win over the High Point Rockers and take the series.
It was one of four RBI for Galvez in the game. He also hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning. But the Rockers (6-7) certainly made it interesting.
Down 7-3 at the bottom of the seventh, High Point scored three runs in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Stephen Cardullo and two-run homer by Dante Bichette and later tied the game on another sacrifice fly - this time courtesy of Richie Shaffer off Giovanni Soto (1-0) - in the bottom of the ninth.
Sam Gervacio surrendered the home run to Bichette. But both runs were charged to Jed Bradley, who after working his way out of a small jam in the sixth in relief of starter Zack Stewart, failed to record an out an inning later. Stewart was charged with three runs and six hits over his five-plus innings.
New Britain (4-7) scored its first seven runs over a three-inning stretch in the third, fourth and fifth. Jason Rogers singled in the team’s first run in the third, while Jared James gave the Bees their first lead of the game at 4-3 in the top of the fourth on a three-run shot to left field. Galvez then hit his homer an inning later.
