NEW BRITAIN – Two New Britain Bees have signed on with MLB organizations, as outfielder Matt Chamberlain and infielder Jake Mackenzie are both one step closer to reaching the majors.

Chamberlain signed with the St. Louis Cardinals, while Mackenzie signed with the Boston Red Sox.

“We are really proud of Matt and Jake,” Bees general manager Brad Smith said. “Those two are the high caliber college players we want on the Bees Roster. We wish them the best as they begin their careers in professional baseball.””

Chamberlain, of the University of New Haven, saw his senior season cut short, but he started all eight games and slashed .259/.512/.519, playing center field and batting out of the leadoff spot. He finished the shortened season with seven RBI.

Mackenzie, a junior at Fordham University, started all 16 games for the Rams and led the team with eighth multi-hit games, batted .356 and stole seven bases, giving him 84 for his collegiate career, placing him fifth on Fordham’s all-time list.

It’s still uncertain whether Chamberlain and Mackenzie will suit up for the Bees this year, as the 2020 Futures League season is still under an indefinite delay due to the coronavirus outbreak.
