NEW BRITAIN – The New Britain Bees entered the eighth inning on Sunday looking to move to 2-0 on the young Futures League season, but their late lead was squandered before suffering their first defeat of the season in extra innings.

Leading the North Shore Navigators 4-1 in the eighth inning, Newington native and former Goodwin Tech standout Tommy Hughes gave up a game-tying three-run home runs to Alex Brickman, sending the game to the 10th before North Shore completed its comeback with a 6-4 win in 10 innings.

Hughes, a former reliever for the Bristol Blues, started the eighth by surrendering a pair of walks before Brickman’s blast, then control issues flared up again for the Bees in the 10th, when Kyle Menaker threw a pair of wild pitches to allow two runs to come across for the Navigators.

New Britain put the tying runs on base in the bottom of the 10th, but Tony Socci struck out to end the game against North Shore closer Beau Dana.

The Navigators struck first with a run in the top of the first, but the Bees wasted no time taking the lead in the bottom half of the inning, riding a two-run blast by Andrew Cain to go ahead 2-1. Cain’s home run continues a hot streak to start the season, after he drove a two-run double to the wall in deep center in the season opener against the Bravehearts on Thursday.

The Bees extended their lead in the sixth with a two-run single by Socci to push the advantage to 4-1 before things unraveled in the eighth.

Cain and Noah Martinez each had multi-hit games for the Bees. Tim Blaisdell tossed four shutout innings after Drew Mead took the mound to start the game, and allowed one run over three frames.

New Britain is off on Monday before hosting the Westfield Starfires on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday marks the team’s first road game of the season, traveling to Nashua to play the Silver Knights.
