Champions crowned in Summer Slam tennis tourney

NEW BRITAIN - Winners have been crowned in the Parks and Recreation Department’s Summer Slam tennis tournament.

Four champions and four runners-up were decided in the tournament, on Aug. 19. More than 35 players participated in the event, which was held at New Britain High School.

In the Boys 11-14 division final, Adam Kosko of Plantsville defeated New Britain’s Ryan Chrostowski 6-1, 6-3.

In the Girls 11-14 division final, Autumn White of New Britain defended her New Britain Summer Slam title, defeating Maya Leonard of Newington 6-4, 6-3.

According to the Parks and Recreation Department, the Boys 15-18 division final was a back-and-forth battle lasting over 3 hours, with defending champion Nick Halkias Jr. of Berlin coming back from a set down for the second year, defeating Farmington’s Timmy Davenport 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

To round out the day, in the Girls 15-18 division final, Isabelle Raymond of Wethersfield defeated Wethersfield teammate Julia Wenceslao 6-3, 6-3.

According to organizers, the tourney was a success for a second straight year and has shown the proper growth to move forward and sustain itself for years to come.

As 2018 approaches, the tournament plans to incorporate a few changes and improvements.
