NEW BRITAIN - While the Common Council will not meet in full until Wednesday, Sept. 13, committees and subcommittees have scheduled meetings this week.
The Committee on Planning, Zoning and Housing will meet tonight to discuss changes to the city’s Code of Ordinances relating to charges for Fire Prevention Bureau inspections and permits.
The proposal would increase the fee for permits and licenses administered by the Fire Prevention Bureau. It would also add inspection fees.
Alderman Jamie Giantonio said the Fire Department went through its inspection and permit fees to make adjustments based on the work it does. Adding inspection requirements for retail fireworks vendors, for example, is a safety move, Giantonio said.
“We would want to make sure that if you’re selling fireworks in the city that you’re building is up to code and everything checks out,” Giantonio explained.
Wednesday, the Committee on Administration, Finance and Law will discuss changes to the Code of Ordinances intended to make it easier to send and receive purchasing bids for city projects.
At present, the city may only send and receive purchasing bids by hard copy through the mail. The amendment would allow the city to send and receive the bids by email.
Mayor Erin Stewart explained the need for this change in an August Common Council meeting:
“It was dead winter, February, in the middle of a snowstorm and everyone was going home because the snowstorm was getting pretty bad. There were only a handful of people left in City Hall, and in pulls up this truck with Vermont license plates.
“It’s the company that does our Fourth of July fireworks every year. They drove here four and a half hours from Vermont because they had no other way to get their bid in and the bid needed to be in that day.
“So they drove through a snowstorm to get here to deliver it, when we could have had the ability to do it electronically, hence this ordinance change.”
The Committee on Planning, Zoning and Housing will meet at 7 p.m. today in Council Chambers.
The Committee on Administration, Finance and Law will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Council Chambers.
Both committees will hold public participation sessions before the meetings.
City Hall is at 27 W. Main St.
