NEW BRITAIN - City firefighters and police officers are set for their annual softball battle.

The Police and Fire Charity Softball Game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at New Britain Stadium. This is the second year for the event after a hiatus of about 10 years.

Each year, the teams alternate the choice of the cause the game benefits. Last year, the police chose the Police Athletic League. This year, the fire department has chosen the Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital.

“We were able to raise more than $1,000 for them (PAL) last year,” said firefighter Tim Cyr, who helped bring back the charity softball game.

Last year’s game was played at Chesley Park, which Cyr said meant added logistical concerns, including renting tents, hiring a DJ and finding a spot to provide food.

This year, the game will be played at New Britain Stadium, and attendees can stick around afterward to watch the New Britain Bees play that evening.

The charity softball game, the Bees game and a picnic in between are all included in the $10 ticket.

Another change from last year is the timing of the softball game. Last year’s game was played in July, but this year’s game will be played in September, closer to the anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The Bees game is themed First Responders Night.

“Last year, the fire department won in a close game (17-14) and this year we’re hoping for another competitive game,” Cyr said.

Cyr thanked the sponsoring Police and Firemen’s Insurance Association, which donated $500 for the fundraiser. Imperial Trophy donated the 3-foot-tall trophy, which is engraved each year with the name of the winning department.

Cyr also thanked the Bees for allowing the departments to use New Britain Stadium.

The game will begin at 2:30 p.m., with gates opening at 2. After the game, a picnic will be held in the park until 5:30 p.m. At 6:35, the Bees will play the Sugar Land Skeeters.

The $10 tickets can be bought at the ballpark on Saturday.

“We’re hoping for another good turnout,” Cyr said. “It’s for a good cause.”
